Former Migori Governor Okoth Obado may soon be off the hook in a high-profile corruption case after the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) revealed plans to withdraw the charges.

The ODPP told the court that it is holding advanced negotiations with the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) and Obado’s legal team in pursuit of a plea bargain. Prosecutors requested a month’s adjournment to allow time to conclude the talks.

Obado, his four children, and several allies were accused of siphoning KSh 505 million from Migori County through irregular procurement deals.

The scandal originally prompted the EACC to pursue recovery of more than KSh 1.9 billion it claims was stolen by the former governor and over 20 associates.

So far, Obado has reached a partial settlement, agreeing to surrender assets estimated at KSh 428 million. However, the EACC noted that no final plea bargain has been signed.

The court has scheduled the matter for further mention on Friday.
