Interior Principal Secretary Dr. Raymond Omolo says that over 20,000 households will benefit from the Ugunja Water Treatment Plant once it’s commissioned.
In a statement posted on his official Facebook page on Wednesday March 12, Dr. Omolo confirmed that the plant, located in Areka Village, Ugunja Sub-County, was completed in December 2024 and is now set to begin full operations.
The plant has a treatment capacity of 8,400 cubic meters and features a network of storage tanks, including elevated steel tanks at Nyambiro (300m³), Yenga (300m³), St. Sylvester Anyiko (500m³) and Madungu (1,000m³), as well as a 1,500m³ concrete ground tank at Got Osimbo.
The water system currently serves 8,000 households, with ongoing last-mile connections projected to more than double the number of beneficiaries.
“Currently, the plant serves approximately 8,000 households, but once the last-mile connections are completed, this number will increase to over 20,000.” Reads part of the statement
Residents in Ugunja Town, Rambula, Sigomere, and Madungu will be among the key beneficiaries, while additional storage at Ligega Primary School will help extend supply to Sega and Ukwala.
The PS emphasized the project’s impact beyond water provision, noting that the facility will serve as a training ground for students from Bondo and Rarieda Technical Institutes, Maseno University, Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University and KIWASI.
The students, according to Dr. Raymond, will gain hands-on experience in water treatment and management, contributing to skills development in the sector.
“Beyond its immediate benefits to the community, the plant also serves as a training hub for students from institutions such as Bondo and Rarieda Technical Institutes, Maseno University, Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University and KIWASI, providing hands-on experience in water treatment and management.” Said Dr. Raymond
