The Late Ian Sing’oei was the son of Elgeyo Marakwet County Commissioner John Korir.

The family of Ian Sing’oei, a 27-year-old mechanical engineering graduate, has confirmed his death after his body was discovered in a river in Mwiki, Nairobi, yesterday. Sing’oei had been missing since December 31, 2024, when he attended a New Year’s Eve gathering with friends.

John Korir, Ian’s father and the Elgeyo Marakwet County Commissioner, dismissed claims linking his son’s death to activism or recent allegations of enforced disappearances.

“Our son was a law-abiding young professional and not involved in political or activist activities,” Korir said, urging the public to avoid speculation.

Following a week-long search by the family and local authorities, Ian’s body was found near his home. Preliminary postmortem results indicated that he drowned, although toxicology tests are still underway to determine whether any substances were involved.

The family has expressed trust in the ongoing police investigation and urged Kenyans to refrain from linking the case to the growing concerns over enforced disappearances.

“We believe in the investigative process and hope for clarity on this tragic incident,” Korir stated.

Despite the broader concerns, Ian’s family is seeking closure. They have condemned media narratives suggesting police abduction, emphasizing that his death should not be used to fuel public fear or speculation.

According to the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights, 82 cases of enforced disappearances have been reported since June 2024, many linked to protests against government policies. These incidents have prompted the Director of Public Prosecutions to call for urgent investigations.
