Man in Critical Condition After Cutting Off His Private Parts in Makueni

A 29-year-old man from Chyandulu Village in Muuni sub-location, Nguumo, is fighting for his life at Makindu Sub-County Hospital after he reportedly cut off his private parts with a sharp object.

The incident happened on October 1, 2025, and was reported by his father, 70-year-old Mutie Kimwalo, and his brother, 34-year-old Benjamin Mutie, who rushed him to hospital for urgent medical attention. Police have recorded the case as self-inflicted serious bodily harm. The reason behind the act is still unknown and investigations are ongoing.

Though such cases are rare in Kenya, they have been documented before. In January 2019, doctors at Kenyatta National Hospital successfully reattached the penis of a secondary school student after it was severed by an attacker using a kitchen knife. The seven-hour operation involved a team of specialists and the boy later regained his ability to pass urine normally and partial erectile function.

Doctors say successful treatment in such cases depends on how quickly the patient is treated and whether the severed organ is preserved properly. Surgery is more likely to succeed if the tissue is kept clean, cool and the patient is admitted within a short period of time.

Specialists also warn that not all hospitals in the country have the expertise or equipment to handle such complex procedures.

He remains under close medical care at Makindu Sub-County Hospital as doctors continue monitoring his condition.
