Sudan has made the difficult decision to halt all imports from Kenya indefinitely, citing concerns over Kenya’s recent hosting of the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and their allies in Nairobi.
This move, announced by Sudan’s Acting Minister of Trade and Supplies, Omar Ahmed Mohamed Ali, is a response to a cabinet resolution aimed at safeguarding Sudan’s national interests and security.
Tensions rose following the signing of a political charter in Nairobi on February 22 by the RSF and affiliated political and armed groups, signaling their intent to establish a parallel government in Sudan. Sudan’s government viewed this as a hostile and intrusive act by Kenya into its internal affairs.
In reaction to Sudan’s import suspension, Kenya’s Foreign Affairs Principal Secretary, Korir Sing’oei, criticized the decision as an exaggerated response.
Sing’oei emphasized Kenya’s commitment to promoting dialogue as the primary means of resolving the prolonged conflict in Sudan, which has resulted in significant loss of life and displacement.
Despite the impact of the suspension on Kenyan exports to Sudan, Sing’oei highlighted Kenya’s role in facilitating peaceful negotiations to address the conflict. The conflict between Sudan’s army and the RSF, ongoing since April 2023, has caused immense suffering and displacement, underscoring the importance of regional peace efforts.
While the suspension may have economic repercussions, it is essential for both countries to prioritize dialogue and cooperation in resolving the conflict and promoting stability in the region.
