Sugarcane farmers in Kakamega among the greatest beneficiaries of President William Ruto’s six-day development tour in Western Kenya.
In what Ruto termed as historic launch, sugarcane farmers for the first time will receive bonuses for sugarcane farmers from Mumias Sugar, which is aimed to uplift farmers according to the president.
However, Mumias East Member of Parliament (MP) Peter Salasya questioned the Ruto’s source of the bonus money farmers are set to receive starting January. According to Salasya, the National Assembly had not budgeted for the bonuses.
“Where is the money we are giving these farmers coming from? We need to know because it was not on our budget,” Salasya questioned.
Kenyans have backed up Salasya’s statement, calling for accountability and knowledge of the source of the budget made known to members of the public. Benny an X user stating that Salasya raised a very important aspect in the six-day tour.
“Indeed the days of hubris are over. It’s time to adopt accountability. The days of roadside pronouncements are long gone. In an era of scarce resources, planning is critical and oversight is a must,’ Erick. A.O said.
Poverty Check purported that once a thorough investigations are done, it will not be a shock that the cabinet did not approve the bonus, and the bonuses should have rather been offered as cheques.
“If you investigate, you will find out that no cabinet passed that bonus thing, and no money has been set aside for the same. Do you know why? You don’t launch a bonus (money)by cutting cane. Cheques would have been the read deal,” he stated.
According to a user identified as Overcome, the bonus is a strategy to capture Raila Odinga strongholds, and neutralize his effect, and divert the Western people from real issues affecting the region raised by Trans Nzoia governor George Natembeya.
“Good question! Where is the money coming from, That cutting of the cane, symbolic meaning? Anyway it’s all about Ruto trying to get Raila’s called strongholds and try to get people’s attention from Natembeya,” he stated.
During the launch, Salasya stole the limelight, calling out Kenya Kwanza government for failing to listen to the people, a lecture that saw him brush shoulders with the head of state.
He later vowed not to step to State House, after Ruto said he will straighten him, as he slowly diverts from being a good leader.
