Former President Uhuru Kenyatta has laughed at African leaders whom have complained following U.S President Donald Trump’s statement on withdrawing support in terms of funding in various sectors, most importantly health.

Kenyatta while speaking during the East African Region Global Health Security Summit 2025 held in Mombasa today,  criticized the leaders claiming that they should not complain since they do not pay any tax to America and America is not their country that should fund them.

“I saw some people the other day crying that Trump has removed funding. Why are you crying? It is not your government, it is not your country. He has no reason to give you anything. You don’t pay taxes in America,” said Kenyatta.

He challenged the leaders to think outside the box and look for ways to support themselves without depending on foreign aid by using the available resources for for right purposes.

“This is a wake-up call for you to say, ‘What are we going to do to support ourselves?’ It is time for us to use our resources for the right thing,” urged Kenyatta.

Kenyatta also emphasized on leaders using resources on things that do not matter, underscoring that they buy firearms to kill fellow citizens instead of using them to protect the country from external attacks.

“When you see the devastation caused across this continent by the many unnecessary wars in Sudan, DRC; we have actually lost more people to bullets fired by Africans on Africans than we lost to the Corona virus. We’ve spent more buying those bullets to kill ourselves than we have spent on protecting our health and our societies,” heightened Kenyatta.

A day ago,  President Trump’s administration moved to stop supply of lifesaving drugs for HIV, malaria and tuberculosis as well as medical supplies for newborn babies, in countries supported by USAid around the globe.

Kenya as a country under USAid, will be negatively impacted by this move since it has depended heavily on this funding.

Trump also pulled out of World Health Organization (WHO) as one of the several executive orders he signed as the 47th President of United States.
