The Kenya Meteorological Department has released a weather advisory, alerting people across various parts of the country to be prepared for moderate to heavy rainfall. This rain is expected between Thursday, November 14, and Friday, November 15, 2024.
According to the forecast, regions such as the Central Rift Valley, Central Kenya (including Nairobi), and the southeastern lowlands should expect substantial rainfall, with over 20 mm predicted to fall within 24 hours starting Thursday. These areas are likely to experience prolonged rain showers, which may disrupt daily activities. On Friday, rainfall intensity is expected to increase further, with some regions, including Nairobi and the southeastern lowlands, potentially receiving more than 30mm within 24 hours. This heightened rainfall could lead to flooding, particularly in low-lying or flood-prone areas.
The Meteorological Department has issued several safety precautions due to the expected conditions. Flooding and slippery roads could create hazardous driving conditions, and reduced visibility may further complicate travel. Residents, especially in flood-prone zones, are advised to stay vigilant and take precautionary measures. The risk of flash floods is especially concerning, as heavy rain upstream can cause rivers to swell, even if the local area remains dry. This means that people living downstream of rivers or near seasonal riverbanks should be prepared for sudden rises in water levels.
The advisory highlights several regions that are most at risk of these weather events, including Meru, Embu, Tharaka Nithi, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Nyeri, Kiambu, Nyandarua, Laikipia, Isiolo, Nakuru, Kericho, Bomet, Narok, parts of Kajiado, Nairobi, Machakos, Kitui, and Makueni. Residents in these areas are urged to stay alert and take necessary precautions to mitigate the impact of the heavy rains.
In addition to the general flooding risks, the department also raised concerns about landslides in hilly areas. Regions such as the Aberdare Ranges, Mount Kenya, and other steep landscapes are particularly vulnerable to landslides, which can occur when heavy rainfall saturates the soil, making it unstable. People living in these areas should be cautious of early warning signs, such as cracks in the ground, tilting trees, or changes in water flow. Those in landslide-prone zones should stay informed about the weather and be ready to evacuate if necessary.
The Meteorological Department also advises the public to avoid walking or driving through flooded areas. Even shallow, fast-moving water can be dangerous, potentially sweeping away vehicles or causing people to lose their footing. Additionally, people should seek shelter indoors during thunderstorms and avoid standing near trees or metal structures, which are more likely to be struck by lightning.
As the rains are expected to lessen in intensity starting Saturday, November 16, the Meteorological Department continues to monitor the situation and will issue further updates as necessary. Residents are encouraged to follow the advisory closely and prioritize safety to minimize the risks posed by the heavy rainfall.
