The National Cohesion and Integrity Commission (NCIC) has issued a notice of no movement to former deputy president Rigathi Gachagua, citing claims of incitement utterances at a local church.
In a notice from the commission chairman Samuel Kobia, Gachagua is alleged to have made utterances that could to incitement, that could lead to ethnic indifferences.
According to Kobia, Gachagua made the utterances on Sunday, February 23, 2025 at AIPCA Antubetwe Kiongo Church in Igembe North Meru County.
“It has come to the attention of this commission that you Hon. Geoffrey Rigathi Gachagua, you made utterances that are likely to undermine, harmonious and peaceful co-existence of different ethnic communities within the Republic. That on Sunday, February 23,2025, at AIPCA Antubetwe Kiongo Church Igembe North within Meru County you made utterances meant to stir up the emotions of a section of the Ameru community,” Kobia stated.
This is the section of the sentiments putting Gachagua in trouble a translated by the NCIC is “Rais amepanga kufukuza Chief Justice Martha Koome. Ameanza na Rigathi Gachagua akamfukuza. Akarudi akafukuza Mithika Linturi. Sasa amepanga njama ya kumfukuza Marth Koome. Amepanga pale kortini, anahonga watu kufukuza Koome.”
According to NCIC, the sentiments by Gachagua on the removal of Koome is misleading, and could lead to promotion of negative ethnicity and lead to enmity among Kenyans. Additionally, the warning by Gachagua for President William Ruto not to step in Meru is a violation of his constitutional right.
“Your statement warning to the president not to set foot in Meru County if the Chief Justice Koome is removed from office, is a direct violation of the president’s constitutional right as the symbol of national unity to visit any part of the country to discharge his official duties as the duty and lawfully elected president of the republic ok Kenya,” further read Kobia’s statement.
Gachagua was further given a warning by NCIC to desist from any conduct that could lead threaten the peaceful co-existence of the country, spark hatred and ethnic animosity leading to violence.
” Now therefore in the interest of national cohesion and unity, we do ask you to desist from such or similar utterances/conduct particulars of which are best within your knowledge from the date of notice as they are likely to interfere with peaceful and harmonious co-existence of ethnic groups,” Kobia warned.
After his ouster, Gachagua has been throwing shades to the Kenya Kwanza government of planned suppression of its critics and failed promises by Ruto as outlined in their manifesto, as well as rampant corruption by his former boss regime.
