Suna East Member of Parliament Hon. Junet Mohamed has clamoured his disapproval of the cancellation of the Adani contract, to take over the operation of the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport.
A few days after President William Ruto instructed the Ministry of Transport to cancel the deal with Adani Group on Thursday November 21, 2024, Junet Mohamed expressed his frustrations over Kenyans who rejected the proposed leasing of JKIA to the Adani Group. Junet believes that incorporating Adani in JKIA would be the country’s best interest.
Citing poor management that has been experienced in the airport including the leaking roofs, the lawmaker claimed that he can’t set his foot into the airport for fear of the roofs.
“I can’t imagine Kenyans rejected Adani taking over JKIA. I can’t even go to the airport now because I fear leaking roofs,” said Junet.
The leader has, nonetheless, welcomed new suggestions on proposed improvement Kenyans want in order to make the airport a step forward. He confirmed that many international airports have been metricised by Private Public Partnerships like the Adani, adding that the government cannot do everything to fix a problem.
“Those who said the Adani thing was bad, should now give us their views. That’s the first place where visitors interact with the country when they land. You can’t tell me it is the government that is supposed to fix everything. Look at how PPPs have transformed many countries,” Junet affirmed.
The President cancelled the deal following an indictment of the Adani Group’s chairperson Mr. Gautam Adani. The Indian billionaire was charged with fraud in the US, where he was accused of orchestrating a $250m bribery scheme and concealing it to raise money in the US.
Besides, French oil, Total Energies company has cancelled its financial business with the Adani Group following the US indictment.
“ Until such time when the accusations against the Adani group individuals and their consequences have been clarified, TotalEnergies will not make any new financial contribution as part of its investments in the Adani group of companies,” the company said in a statement.
The company claimed that it was not made aware of the ongoing investigations into the alleged bribery by the Adani Group.
“TotalEnergies was not made aware of the existence of an investigation into the alleged corruption scheme,” the company added.
