The Siaya County Stadium, a transformative multi-purpose sports facility, is nearing completion and is poised to officially open on January 1, 2025 according to official communication from the county government.
The highly anticipated event will feature a match between Kenya’s legendary Gor Mahia FC and Tanzania’s Yanga SC, with former Prime Minister Raila Odinga set to be the Chief Guest.
With a current seating capacity of 20,000 and plans to expand to 60,000, the stadium is a key part of the Siaya County Government’s initiative to enhance sports infrastructure.
Under the leadership of Governor James Orengo, the project has experienced significant progress since its rejuvenation in August 2022, moving from 70% completion to nearing readiness for its inaugural event.
Dr. David Sanmac Okoth, the Director of Sports and Arts, has praised the collaborative efforts that have prioritized the stadium’s development, highlighting recent renovations that include the installation of a new roof, improved restrooms, and comprehensive landscaping.
Notably, an athlete track is set to be laid with tartan rubber within the next month, enhancing the facility’s capacity to host events even at night through state-of-the-art lighting.
Stadium Manager Juma Felix emphasized the facility’s role in nurturing local talent and promoting sports tourism.
“Our goal is to provide athletes with access to top-notch facilities that empower them to realize their full potential,” Felix stated.
The stadium is anticipated to become a hub for community events, competitions, and business activities, further enriching the social fabric of Siaya.
The completed stadium will boast modern amenities including seating stands, changing rooms, and advanced lighting systems, all designed to foster a vibrant sporting culture in the region.
As the opening day approaches, local businesses are gearing up for the influx of visitors and the renewed interest in sports that the stadium promises to bring.
