The 97th Academy awards, popularly known as the Oscars, was held yesterday on March 2, 2025 at Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles and was graced by different public figures as they celebrated the best films of 2024.
The show was hosted by comedian Conan O’Brien for the first time, with the assistance of executive producers Raj Kapoor and Katy Mullan. It was aired live on ABC and Hulu from 7 pm ET- 4pm PT.
The biggest winner of the night was “Anora” directed by Sean Baker which took home five awards including, Best picture, Baker also made history by winning individual awards for the film, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, Best Film Editing, and a share of Best Picture as a producer.
Anora was followed by “The Brutalist” which took home three awards respectively. Adrien Brody won Best Actor for the brutalist- his second Oscar, after his first victory in 2003 when he became the youngest best actor featured in the Pianist, beating out nominees like Timothée Chalamet (featured in “A Complete Unknown”), who had hoped to break Brody’s record.

In the Best Picture Category the winner was Anora, followed by The Brutalist, A complete Unknown, Conclave, Dune: Part Two, Emilia Perez, I’m still here, Nickel Boys, The substance and Wicked in that order. Best Actresses were; Mikey Madison; Featured in Anora and also the winner, Cynthia Erivo; Wicked, Karla Sofia; Emilia perez; Demi moore; The substance and Fernanda Torres; I’m still here. Best Actors were, Adrien Brody; The Brutalist, Colman Domingo; Sing sing, Ralph Fiennes; Conclave and Sebastian Stan; The Apprentice. Best Supporting Actors were, Zoe saldana; Emilia Perez, Monica Barbaro; A Complete Unknown, Ariana Grande; Wicked, Felicity Jones; The Brutalist and Isabella Rossellini; The conclave. Best Supporting Actor include, Kieran culkin; A Real Pain, Yura Borusov in Anora, Edward Norton in “A Complete Unknown, Guy pearce; The Brutalist and Jeremy strong in “The Apprentice.
Best Director, Sean Baker; Anora was the winner, followed by Jacques Audiard; Emilia perez, Brady Corbet; The Brutalist, Coralie Fargeat; The substance and James mangold; The complete unknown. Best International feature included, I’m still here; Brazil (winner) The girl with the needle; Denmark, Emilia perez (France), The seed of the sacred fig; Germany and Flow; Latvia.
Best animated feature included, Flow (winner); Inside out 2; Memoir of a snail; Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance most fowl and the Wild Robot
Best Original Screenplay, Anora; directed by Sean Baker, The Brutalist; directed by Brady corbet & Mona fastvold, Real pain directed by Jesse Eisenberg, September 5 directed by Moritz binder, Alex David & Tim Felbhaum and lastly, The substance directed by Coralie Fargeat.
Other categories were Best Original Screenplay having Arona by Sean Baker as the top winner; Best Adapted Screenplay with Conclave directed by Peter Straughan as top winner; Best Original Song with El mal in Emilia perez as top winner; Best original score with top winner as “The Brutalist” ; Best documentary feature with “No other land as top winner”; Best costume design with “Wicked” as top winner; Best make-up and hairstyling with Substance as top winner; Best production design with wicked as top winner; Best sound with Dune: Part 2 as top winner; Best filming editing with Anora as top winner; Best cinematography with Brutalist as top winner; Best visual effects with Dune Part 2 as top winner; Best Live Action Short with “I’m not a robot” as top winner.
The Best Animated Short category had “In the shadow of the Cypress” as the top winner; Lastly, the Best Documentary Short had “The only girl in the orchestra” as top winner.
The ceremony was started with ‘defying gravity’ performance from wicked stars, Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo. Others artists who performed include Lisa of Blackpink, Doja cat among others.
The official dress code for the event is usually formal or black-tie, with men expected to wear tuxedos and women in formal gowns, however the academy seems to have a flexible dress code since frequent atendees like Adam chandler was seen wearing a casual attire consisting of a short and a hoodie which became some of the outstanding and hilarious observations made by netizens at the event.
“He should be protected at all costs.” They hilariously commented while circulating his picture on the internet.
One of the memorable moments also included “No Other Land” actors ( a palestanian documentary film directed by Basel Adra and others which won the best documentary film category) calling for Palestanian justice. They criticized American foreign policy for obstructing efforts to restore peace in the region. They gave an highlight of the ongoing injustices in West bank, particularly in Masafer Yatta, and called for an immediate intervention.
“We call on the world to take serious actions to stop the injustice and to stop the ethnic cleansing of Palestinians,” They said during their acceptance speech.
