Gor Mahia treasurer Dolfina Odhiambo has refuted claims that the club received Ksh5 million ($40,000) from Tanzanian side Singida Black Stars for the failed transfer of right-back Rooney Onyango.
Singida reportedly wired the funds in November 2024 after agreeing on a deal for Onyango’s move. However, the player later chose to stay, citing interest from European clubs. The Tanzanian club, frustrated by the collapsed transfer, demanded a refund in a letter dated January 3, warning that failure to comply within 14 days would prompt them to escalate the matter to FIFA.
“Our Club wrote to your Club on 3.1.2025 requesting your club to kindly refund the said amount since the transfer did not materialize due to your fault,” read part of the letter.
Odhiambo, who has been excommunicated from Gor Mahia’s committee but remains the official treasurer, denied the funds ever reached the club’s accounts.
“As the bona fide club treasurer, I wish to state that the monies wired by Singida FC did not pass through the club’s official account, and my office was never involved,” she said in a statement seen by The Nyanza Review.
Far beyond financial disputes, there sits an accusation of long-serving chairman Ambrose Rachier of deliberately delaying club elections made by Odhiambo, who issued a five-point ultimatum demanding a clear roadmap for polls, which must be held before the end of May, as directed by Sports Registrar Rose Wasike.
With Singida threatening FIFA intervention and internal wrangles intensifying, Gor Mahia has to deal with mounting pressure to resolve both the financial dispute and leadership crisis swiftly.
