After River Sondu Miriu overflowed on Monday, Nyadina village in Nyakach Kisumu County was left flooded, displacing 300 families and ruining over 500 acres of crops and cattles swept away.

While talking to the press, Ruth Otieno, one of the residents, lamented that she had been depending on her crops to pay school fees. Now that her crops have been destroyed, she is worried about how she will manage to pay the fees.

“The farms have been destroyed, and my beans are ruined. In January, the children are supposed to go to school, and I’m wondering how they will go since this was what I was relying on,” said Ruth Otieno.

Alfred on the other hand, while requesting for assistance from the government or any well-wishers, cried that all they had were swept by the raging floods.

“All the cattle have gone with the water, chickens and cooking pots too. We don’t even have cooking pots, any well wisher or government should bring us some floor and cooking pots so we cook,”said Alfred.

According to Njoga, there is no clean water for drinking. Pregnant women and children are now suffering, and malaria is so rampant that kids can’t go outside due to the flooded water everywhere.

“The illness here is rampant, kids and pregnant women are the most affected. These people are experiencing severe diarrhea and are seriously suffering no good drinking water all the sources have been contaminated. The children are stuck indoors and can’t go outside because malaria is widespread,” Njoga added.

“We go to hospitals the other side of the river. We can’t get medicine. Now those whom we voted for in large numbers during the campaign should come and see those who voted for them,” said Roselyne Akoth.

Residents of Nyadina in Kisumu, who are suffering from the severe impact of heavy rains, are requesting the construction of dykes along the River Sondu Miriu to protect themselves from the powerful floodwaters.
