The prestigious 13th East African University games came to an end on Friday December 20, 2024 at Maseno university with Ugandan teams dominating in the games.
Uganda Matyrs university became the new champions of the 13th East African University games soccer men after defeating Makerere University 2-1 in an entertaining final which was played on Friday ,December 20, 2024 at the GSQ grounds in Maseno University. The Matyrs netted the first goal of the game before Makerere University equalized a few minutes to the end of halftime. A late strike in the second half from Uganda Matyrs university lethal striker saw them clinch this year’s soccer title men becoming the new East African football kings.
An eye catching final which started at 10:00 AM, was the last activity of the day marking the end of the 13th edition of the EAU games before the awarding and later the closing ceremony.
The champions defeated Ardhi university of Tanzania 2-0 in the first semi final, while Makerere University eliminated Islamic University in the second semi final before the two Ugandan giants faced each other in the finals. Islamic University in Uganda finished third in this year’s competition.
The martyrs now take the crown from their counterparts Bugema university who were the defending champions.
The hosts Maseno University soccer men were eliminated in the round of 16 by the defending champions Bugema university in a 3-1 thriller held at Maseno School. Defensive errors from the goalkeeper and the defense gave the visitors 2 goals in the second half after a 1-1 draw in the first half of the game.
On the other side, Makerere University emerged the 2024 winners of the soccer ladies after defeating Uganda Christian University in the girls final held on Thursday 19th December 2024.
The host Maseno football ladies finished fourth after a 3-0 defeat in the semi finals to Uganda Christian University, before another 1-0 brutal defeat to Kampala University in the playoffs. Kampala University finished 3rd.
The 14th edition of the East African University games will be held in Tanzania as dates are yet to be announced.
