Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has revealed the truth behind his fallout with President William Ruto that led to his impeachment on November 17, 2024.
While speaking at AIPCA church Kangari in Kigumo in Murang’a, Rigathi said that his criticism of the Adani takeover deal of the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport was the main reason President William Ruto spearheaded his purge.
The former DP said that he stood firm, despite being slammed by other leaders who could not face the President and tell him the truth on his face.
“ Hii maneno ya Adani na zile zingine ndo zilifanya mimi na rais hatuelewani because pale katika cabinet ilikuwa ni mimi peke yangu naweza ambia rais ukweli, wengine wote ni waoga. Akitembea kwake namna hii, wote wanaenda chini,’’ said Gachagua.
He added that he told the President that this Adani deal was malicious and not good for the people, claiming that by involving Adani to take over JKIA, was probably auctioning the country together with the people, something that led to enmity between him and the President. Consequently, Rigathi Gachagua said that he was accused of opposing government projects.
“ Nobody can tell the President this is right and what the people feel. Mimi nilimwambia President William Ruto hii maneno ya Adani ni silly , iko na ukora. This is auctioning the country and the people. Mr. President akanichukia, ikasemekana napinga miradi ya serikali. Ufisafi ni miradi ya serikali? This is corruption, not a government program,’’ continued Gachagua.
During the service, he also revealed that President William Ruto did not cancel the Adani deal due to goodwill but was forced to do so after the Adani Group’s chair, Mr. Gautam Adani was indicted for fraud by U.S. prosecutors and arrest warrants issued for him and his nephew for their alleged roles in a $265 million scheme to bribe Indian officials to secure power-supply deals.
The President on Thursday 21 November, 2024, directed the Ministries of Transport and Energy to cancel the procurements with Adani Group over JKIA and KETRACO deals.
