Traders in Kisumu have expressed profound joy as the county government of Kisumu embarks on the installation of floodlights in various markets and public utilities across the county.
Speaking to The Nyanza Review today, Otonglo traders led by the new market chairman Mr Mike Otieno, lauded the county government for taking the initiative to install floodlights at the busy trading center saying this would, apart from curbing rampant insecurity also enable them to do business with ease.
The county government has so far installed a total of 145 floodlights in the key market centers and public utilities in the entire county during the financial year 2024/ 2025.
Prior to the installation of the floodlights at the busy business center, the traders had initially been compelled to close their businesses as early as 7 pm.
“We as traders would wish to pat the county government of Kisumu on the back for taking the initiative to install a floodlight. We are confident that would enable us to do our businesses up to an appropriate time unlike before when we used to close our businesses prematurely,” said the market chairman.
Mr. Otieno, on behalf of the traders at the same time appealed to the county government to consider installing streetlights along Otonglo – Pombo rural access road for security purposes saying that majority of the traders residing alongside Lake Victoria have in majority of occasions ended up being attacked and robbed by some criminal elements while returning to their respective homes.
“Though we now have a floodlight, we are still appealing to the county government of Kisumu to install streetlights along Otonglo Pombo to provide security to the traders majority of whom have sustained serious injuries,” said Otieno.
Central Kisumu Ward MCA Zack Okoyo assured the traders that the county government is set to install streetlights along the said rural access road in the next financial year 2024/2025 so as to ensure that the traders are safe.
“Streetlights will be installed along Otonglo Pombo rural access road come financial year 2024/2025,” he assured the traders.
