Harambee Stars interim head coach Francis Kimanzi has expressed satisfaction with his team’s fighting spirit at the ongoing Mapinduzi Cup in Zanzibar, as they gear up for their second group match against Kilimanjaro Stars of Tanzania on Tuesday at Gombani Stadium, starting at 7 pm EAT.
Kenya kicked off their campaign with a hard-fought 1-1 draw against Burkina Faso over the weekend, showcasing determination in their opening fixture.
Speaking to the press ahead of the crucial tie, Kimanzi praised the players for their resilience and passion.
“I want the boys to enjoy themselves, but also stay sharp—CHAN is around the corner, and it’s time to show what we’re made of. I’m impressed so far. The spirit in the camp is great, and the players are giving their all on the pitch,” Kimanzi remarked.
The tactician also hinted at the importance of the Mapinduzi Cup in preparing the national team for the upcoming African Nations Championship (CHAN). With CHAN exclusively featuring players plying their trade in domestic leagues, the Mapinduzi Cup offers a rare opportunity for Harambee Stars’ local-based talents to showcase their potential on an international stage.
This year’s CHAN will be co-hosted by Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania in February. The draw against Burkina Faso served as a wake-up call for the Stars, highlighting areas that need improvement, particularly in defense and finishing. Kimanzi is expected to tweak his lineup slightly for the encounter against Kilimanjaro Stars, aiming for a balance between experience and youthful exuberance.
Tuesday’s game is crucial for Kenya’s chances of advancing to the next stage. A win would boost morale and put the Stars in a commanding position in Group B. However, Kilimanjaro Stars, who are known for their pace and physicality, are equally determined to make an impact in the tournament.
Meanwhile, Kenya is trying to beat the deadline in readiness for the CHAN 2025 tourney as selected stadia are currently under renovation.
