Tesla has officially overtaken Audi in global car sales for the first time ever. According to a report by Motor1.com, Audi sold 1.67 million vehicles in 2024, whereas Tesla sold 1.79 million in 2024.
Deliveries of Audi’s fully electric models declined 8% globally to around 164,000 units. However, there are still debates of whether Tesla is a luxury automaker.
Tesla Inc, the American electric vehicle is largely attributed to driving an EV revolution. It is known for its inclination to challenge industry conventions on numerous fronts, which include over-the-air-updates, self driving technology and automotive construction methods.
In 2023, it was considered one of the most valuable car brands, and in the same year, the Model Y was the world’s best selling car. The brand’s most greatest achievement is the Supercharger network of EV charging solutions.s
Tesla’s contender, Audi, a German automaker is credited with producing a range of luxury vehicles, which combine sporty driving dynamics with the latest technology.
It also has a rich history which unfolds to 100 years back, and includes both production cars and a rich racing heritage.
Tesla cracking with the highest sale last year, is an impressive performance, considering the brand only has five models, which are all electric in its lineup which includes: model 3, model Y, model X and the highly coveted Cyber truck, which accounted for the remaining 85,133 units.
Audi, also the subsidiary of Lamborghini, is an automative juggernaut with a superfluous of models including Allstreet, Sedan, Avant, A5 sedan, A6 sedan, A7 Sportback, A8, Q2, Q3 Sportback, Q5 sportback,Q7 and Q8.
On the electric side they have Q4 Tron-E Sportback, A6 Avant E-Tron, Q6 E-Tron Sportback, Q8 E-Tron Sportback and the E-Tron GT, which all have a sporty flavor.
It also has its China exclusive models including the long-wheelbase Sedans, Q6 and SUVs,among others, but somehow, Tesla was able to beat it, and its vast portfolio makes the victory more applaudable.
According to reports, Tesla launched a model Y refresh, which has sparked a debate, that if it may now be working towards beating BMW also, but it probably needs that long awaited entry level EV, to catch up with Mercedes Benz in the sales car race, which retained its luxury sales crown with 2,200,177 despite its falling 2.3%, thereby carrying the famous roundel.
Tesla lovers did not miss a chance to gloat at this victory.
“I have no skin in the game as i don’t own an EV, and I’m unlikely to ever own one, as a humble mechanic. However, If i had a choice, It would be Tesla. We don’t just see them breaking down, whereas I see all other makes.” Prom commented.
“I always liked Audi and still think their RS6 is sick, yet here I am driving a Tesla and wouldn’t trade my M3 for an Audi. Oh and I’m German. ” SaywerMerritt added.
“Congratulations and hats off to Elon Musk and the amazing Tesla team.” Monica said.
Even though most people were congratulating Tesla, Audi lovers told Tesla lovers not to get ahead of themselves because it is only a short time victory.
“That is because Oil prices were high. Now oil is down and electricity is going up in price, get ready for the screaming match.” Carole commented.
Following Tesla’s CEO, Elon Musk past remarks, he clearly stated that other car manufacturers might not survive in the game for too long, if they don’t innovate quickly enough.
According to him, it is because the FSD model alone makes Tesla a better value in general and for future prospects, which leaves us wondering if Elon Musk is dominating the innovation industry.
