The Kenya national men’s football team, Harambee Stars has received a major boost as the side takes on Kilimanjaro Stars in the second outing of the ongoing Mapinduzi Cup in Zanzibar today.
Four Gor Mahia players have joined the camp after featuring for the all time Kenyan Premier League champions in an exhibition match against Uganda’s Kitara FC at the Siaya County Stadium opening ceremony on January 2, 2025.
Austin Odhiambo, Rooney Onyango, Alphonce Omija and Sylvester Owino will be available as Francis Kimanzi’s side aim to record their first win at the competition, this is after Kenya were held to a 1-1 stalemate by Burkina Faso in their opening fixture at the weekend.
James Kinyanjui scored his first international goal on his debut for the national team with AFC Leopards sensation Kelly Madada also making a debut for Harambee Stars.
Speaking to the press ahead of the demanding tie, Harambee Stars head coach Francis Kimanzi noted that opening fixtures of any tournament are never easy, showing satisfaction with his side’s performance against Burkina Faso.
“The first game is always difficult because the players are not fully settled, but I believe they handled it well until the very end. There’s definitely something we can build on, and we leave with a sense of satisfaction,” said Kimanzi.
The fixture is scheduled for today, 7pm at Gombani Stadium in Tanzania.
Meanwhile, Francis Kimanzi is handling the team on interim basis with the new Football Kenya Federation office seeking to appoint a permanent head coach for the national team.
