Siaya County celebrated World Sight Day, emphasizing “Eye Care for Children” during a community event at Boro Catholic Church.

Chief Executive Committee Member for Health, Dr. Martin Konyango, highlighted the importance of regular eye check-ups for children and the county’s commitment to improving access to eye care services.

The event showcased a collaboration between the Nyalore Government and the Fred Hollows Foundation, aimed at providing essential eye care to the community.

Dr. Konyango noted that one in five children requires eye care, and the establishment of eye clinics across all sub-counties is a crucial step toward ensuring every child in Kenya has access to necessary services.

“Our clinics in Ambira, Ukwala, Madiany, Bondo, and Yala are equipped with quality eye care technology and trained staff, enhancing Siaya’s reputation for eye health,” said Dr. Konyango.

He urged the community to seek professional help rather than relying on herbal remedies, emphasizing the effectiveness of subsidized treatments available at local hospitals.

Beneficiaries expressed gratitude for the initiative, particularly in receiving free spectacles. Josephine Osoro shared her joy at being able to read messages clearly for the first time. “It feels good to see clearly,” she remarked.

Collins Denice Oduor from the Essilorluxottica Foundation announced the donation of 250 spectacles to the residents, mainly benefiting the elderly. Siaya County’s eye sight services officer, Eric Omondi Omollo, reiterated the pressing need to address children’s vision issues, noting that many face significant challenges that affect their education.

The event not only aimed to raise awareness about children’s eye care but also highlighted the ongoing efforts to tackle visual impairments in the community, ensuring that all children can thrive with clear visit
