Belgut member of Parliament (MP) Nelson Koech has proposed formation of a prime minister position for Raila Odinga after failing to secure the African Union Chairperson (AUC) in Addis Ababa over the weekend.

Speaking during an interview on Monday, February 17, Koech said that it would be wise for the Kenya Kwanza government to form a structure to accommodate the former prime minister.

“What will Raila be doing with his energy, wisdom and with his experience? I think we in Kenya Kwanza should accommodate  him with that experience, that advice, and  the counsel that he will give us. I think it will help in bettering our country, society and our management,” he stated.

He said there is need to review the National Dialogue Committee (NADCO) report to see what the report says about positions, however, he said the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party leader is not in the Broad-Based government because of positions, but his experience in leadership.

“We have to find a structure  that will accommodate him, Raila Odinga, whichever position that accommodates him, we have to find that position. We could relook at the NADCO report and see what the report says, I don’t think it is about position but the resource he has as a person,” he added.

His proposal has further been backed by Nandi senator Samson Cherargei, calling for the full implementation of the report, to allow Raila serve Kenyans, and as an act of reward to the long-time political icon.

“We must now fully implement the NADCO report by amending the constitution to create the office of the Prime Minister and allow Raila to serve Kenyans in that capacity. This is the only way we can appreciate and reward him,” he said.

Raila’s return from the AUC is set to bring a political shift in the country, after the High Court nullified Kenya Kwanza as the majority in the National Assembly, nullifying a declaration by Speaker Moses Wetang’ula declaration in October 22, 2022. The ruling declaring his Alliance as the majority in National Assembly.

However, in his ruling on Tuesday, February 11, Wetang’ula stated that the High Court cannot declare the majority in Parliament, stating that Kenya Kwanza is still the majority in the National Assembly, while Azimio La Umoja One Kenya Alliance the minority.

On Sunday evening, Moses Kuria’s post on X sparked debate after posting the Minority leader Junet Mohamed and Minority Whip Milly Odhiambo, captioned, “here cometh the hour, cometh the man and woman.”
