The residents of Wachara village in Bar A sub location, North Kisumu ward of Kisumu West Sub county are up in arms with the county government of Kisumu over failure to drill a water borehole in the area to curb the persistent water shortage in the area.

According to a spot check carried out by The Nyanza Review on 12th December 2024, the water the local community rely on for domestic use is unfit for human consumption owing to the fact that the water that flows through the tributary of Ulalo river is also utilized by the livestock that make the water untidy before flowing downstream where the residents draw it.

Winnie Adhiambo, a resident of the aforementioned areas, said that they have also been depending on water that flows from under a huge rock adding that the water spring had dried up for three months, a situation that had forced them to draw the filthy water at the expense of their health.

“This water spring had dried up lasting three good months. This had forced us to fetch dirty water from River Ulalo,” she said.

A disillusioned community leader who sought anonymity for fear of intimidation confirmed that most areas of North Kisumu administrative ward have actually been facing an acute water shortage for a long period of time running into months despite frequent appeal to the local leadership to move with speed and address the matter that has become a thorn in the flesh of the local community.

However, the area Member of the County Assembly Hon Samuel Ndede said, while speaking during the Jamhuri Day celebration that was held at Wachara Mixed Secondary School that the county government of Kisumu had already sent a team of geologists to the area to undertake a feasibility study purposely to establish the most suitable place where the water point can be drilled.

He, at the same time assured the local community that the county government has already put effective measures in place aimed at addressing the water shortage he emphasized has affected some parts of the county.

“The drilling of a borehole in the area is scheduled to start by next week without fail and this will put an end to the persistent water shortage here”, said the MCA.

Kisumu West MP Rosa Buyu who had also graced the occasion on her part told the area MCA not to take the complaints of the local community over the shortage of water lightly but should instead act swiftly to ensure the water shortage is resolved once and for all.
