Kenyans on Saturday 4th, January 2025 condoled with the family of the Kenya Human Rights National Commission on Human Rights, Roseline Odede shortly after her death.
In a statement to the public on Saturday, KNCHR Vice chair Dr. Raymond Neyeri announced the passing of Odede.
According to the statement, the seasoned human rights activist died on Friday after a short illness
“It is with shock and deep sorrow that I inform you of the demise of Roseline Odhiambo Odede,HSC, Chairperson of the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights,that happened yesterday, Friday, 3rdJanuary,2025 after a short illness.” Read part of the statement.
Nyeris mourned Odede’s death calling it untimely and a big blow to the Commission and the Nation at large.As a commission, he said, they had the privilege of serving with Roseline Odede as the Chairperson at the helm of the KNCHR’s leadership.
Odede’s family has also received condolences from President William Ruto,who acknowledged Roseline’s efforts throughout her administration to promote equality and a more equitable society.
“Deeply saddened by the death of the Chairperson of the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights Roseline Odhiambo Odede.She was a formidable human rights champion and a distinguished campaigner for a more equal and fairer society.Our thoughts and love are with the family at this sorrowful moment. Rest In Peace, Roseline,” Ruto said.
Other notable Kenyans who sent their condolences include former chief justice David Maraga, chief justice Martha Koome and President of the Law Society Faith Odhiambo.
Chief justice Martha Koome has pointed out that the commission has been a shining example of human rights activism and excellence under her direction.
Faith Odhiambo, president of the Law Society of Kenya praised Odede as a level- headed, accommodative and collaborative partner who prioritized service to the people.
” I had the privilege of serving with her both at Fida Kenya and in the Law Society of Kenya Council and all our engagements, she was a level-headed, accommodative, and collaborative partner who always prioritised service to the people and the greater good,” she said.
LSK president further went on to state the exemplary work Odede had prior to her demise.
“Roseline’s tenure as the chairperson of KNCHR was characterised by exemplary fortitude and commitment to the rule of law and human rights. She steered the Commission through a difficult human rights context in Kenya but maintained unfettered dedication to standing up firmly against impunity, government excesses, and poor governance. Her death is a big loss for the country and the community of human rights defenders.”
Roseline spoke out courageously against the recent wave of abductions that has rocked the country calling on police reforms to end police brutality witnessed during the Gen Z protests in June 2024.
