Gor Mahia’s interim coach, Zedekiah “Zico” Otieno, has downplayed growing calls for his permanent appointment, stating that he has already demonstrated his capabilities throughout his coaching career. Otieno, a revered club legend, assumed the interim role last month following the departure of Brazilian coach Leonardo Neiva and has led the team to three consecutive victories.
Under his guidance, Gor Mahia has climbed to within five points of the league leaders with two games in hand, fueling speculation about his confirmation as head coach. However, Zico insists he is focused on the task at hand.
“I’ve been here before. I’ve coached the national team and Gor Mahia previously. There’s nothing new to prove,” Otieno stated. “My focus is on the work, and the rest will take care of itself. Our goal as a team remains unchanged – we want to defend the league title.”
Otieno also credited Neiva for laying a strong foundation, which he is now building upon.
“When we started the season with Coach Neiva, the aim was clear – retain the league title. That hasn’t changed. He did a great job, and I’m building on that foundation,” he added.
Meanwhile, Gor Mahia’s management is excessing patience in deciding on permanent head coach. Club chairman Ambrose Rachier revealed that the vacancy has attracted 33 applications from foreign candidates.
“We’re taking our time to evaluate the type of coach who aligns with the club’s vision and needs,” Rachier said.
With Gor Mahia set to face Bidco United in Machakos on Saturday, Otieno remains steadfast in his commitment to leading the team forward, letting his results speak for themselves.
