Moi University has announced its reopening date after the institution was indefinitely closed a month ago after workers demonstrated demanding their salaries.

In a letter released by the university, students are required to report to school on Monday 11th November to continue with their disrupted semester.

” This is therefore, to announce the opening of the university with immediate effect. Students are to report back for their studies and classes are to resume on Monday, 11th November 2024 from 8.00 a.m,” read the letter.

This announcement comes shortly after the institution had a special meeting today where the university’s Senate resolved to reopen.

Learning was disrupted in the university on 3rd October 2024 following an industrial strike by the university staff who complained of delayed salaries.

The university was reportedly going through financial constrains, and it took an intervention by the government to look into the matter to ensure the institution returns to normalcy.

Its reopening followed a series of events between the government, the university governing body and the staff.

On Saturday, November 2, and Monday, November 4, there were consultative meetings with UASU and KUSU.

Additionally, the meetings continued on Tuesday with the unions and signing of the Return to Work Formula, which were done yesterday.

Currently, lecturers are on strike countrywide. Early today, led by the Secretary General of the University Academic Staff Union (UASU), Constantine Wesonga, they rejected Kshs. 4.3 billion offer by the government.

The lecturers want Kshs. 9.7 billion as required by Collective Bargaining Agreement of September 2024.
