Why We All Win When We Celebrate Men

This November 19th, as the world marks International Men’s Day, a predictable murmur often arises: why do men, who have historically held societal power, need a day of celebration? This perspective misses the point entirely. Celebrating men on this day isn’t about asserting dominance; it’s about fostering a healthier, more complete conversation about masculinity and humanity.

The core themes of the day—promoting positive male role models, improving men’s health, and highlighting their positive contributions—are causes that benefit everyone. For too long, the script for masculinity has been narrow and damaging. Boys are taught to be stoic, to suppress emotion, and to equate self-worth with financial success. The consequences are stark: men account for over three-quarters of suicides in many countries and are far less likely to seek help for mental or physical health issues. By celebrating men, we challenge these toxic norms. We celebrate the father who is an active, nurturing parent, the friend who is emotionally available, and the man who prioritizes his well-being without shame.

Furthermore, recognizing the positive contributions of men in our communities—from the dedicated teachers and nurses to the volunteers and caregivers—paints a fuller picture of male experience. It moves the needle from a critique of patriarchal structures to an appreciation of the individuals who strive to do good.

Ultimately, celebrating International Men’s Day is an act of empathy. It’s about saying that men’s lives have inherent value beyond their utility as providers or protectors. It creates space for a more compassionate and inclusive dialogue about the pressures they face. When we affirm the positive aspects of manhood and encourage men to be their whole, healthy selves, we don’t just uplift men—we build a better society for us all.
