Chaos on Tuesday evening erupted at the Kisumu High Court after police attempted to re-arrest County Executive Committee Member (CECM) in charge of Finance, George Okong’o.
This came shortly after High Court Judge Shariff Mwanaisha fined the Finance Officer Kshs 200,000 and suspended his sentence.
The member is accused of contempt of court in a case where the county is accused of not fully paying Majock Construction Firm its dues.
The judge suspended the conviction until December 19, 2024 in order to give Kisumu County time to pay the contractor the pending bill.
According to reports, the County owes the firm Ksh.16 million. However, it has only paid Ksh.8 million.
As Mr. Okong’o was leaving, the police officers, both in uniform and plain clothes came to re-arrest him, but his security and other county employees, blocked them, causing mayhem at the court premises.
During the commotion, many people got injured as they sought to flee the chaos.
The finance officer ran towards City Hall, where the Governor’s office is located to seek refuge. The chaos followed leaving doors broken as the police stood firm of arresting Mr. Okong’o.
Fortunately, he got inside the Governor’s office and stayed there amidst consultations that calmed the tension. Nevertheless, he sustained some minor injuries.
