Trump signed an executive order yesterday, together with Musk in the oval office, officiating a partnership aimed at reducing the federal workforce.
The initiative facilitated through the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) has already resulted in significant cuts, notably, $900 million from the Department of Education
The reforms are part of a broader effort to overhaul government operations, raising questions about transparency, oversight, and the implications for democracy in governmental operations.
Elon Musk leads the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), a new initiative under President Trump aimed at reducing Government waste and improving efficiency.
DOGE is not a cabinet agency but operates within the White House, giving Musk significant influence over federal operations without requiring Senate confirmation. Musk’s role includes overseeing the downsizing of federal agencies; reviewing government operations, and potentially auditing federal entities like the Federal Reserve.
“If the people cannot vote and have their will be decided by their elected representatives, by the form of the President, the Senate, and the House, then we don’t live in a democracy; we live in a bureaucracy.” Musk said during the officiation of the reform.
“There could be close to $1 trillion dollars of waste we’re going to find (through cuts).” Trump added
DOGE will examine how employees with high net worth but low salaries accrued significant wealth, focusing on potential conflicts of interest or unethical practices.
Legal challenges and public scrutiny are expected, given the sensitive nature of accessing personal financial data and the political implication of such probes
