Former health Cabinet Secretary Susan Nakhumicha hilariously narrated how she lost her job in June 2024, following a series of demonstration by the Gen Zs, pressurizing President William Ruto to fire the cabinet over incompetence.

Nakhumicha said their firing was unlike old days, when it was announced on radio, but for their case, they needed to wait on televisions, where it was announced that the whole cabinet has been sent home, and ever since, she has been farming cabbages in Cheranganyi Trans Nzoia county.

“Mimi nilikuwa waziri wa afya, hii mitandao ikakuja wakasema magenz wanaanguka na watu, wakaanguka na mimi. During the times of Moi, it was an announcement on radio, but ours was not on radio. Ulikuwa unakaa kwa TV unangojea, nikaskia cabinet yote nyumbani. Hata sasa nafanya ukulima tangu hiyo wakati sina kazi, nauza cabbages nakupanda cabbages kule Cheranganyi” she narrated.

Nakhumicha was speaking at the home of former Independent and Boundaries Electorate Commission (IEBC) Wafula Chebukati in Sabata, Matunda Kiminini in Trans Nzoia county, where leaders from the Western region were eulogizing him.

She further stated that she was even struggling to raise the money for condolences, after losing her job, and asked the residents to continue praying for her.

“Hata sadaka ya matanga imekuwa ngumu ngumu hivi hivi, lakini nikajaribu nikatoa sadaka yangu ya cabbages. So naomba mweendelee kuniombea,” Nakhumicha said.

Other leaders in attendance included National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula, MPs Innocent Mugabe, Ferdinand Wanyonyi, Kakai Bissau, Didmus Barasa. Also in attendance were Bungoma governor Ken Lusaka, former Trans Nzoia governor Kennedy Khaemba, Trans Nzoia senator Allan Chesang’ and his counterpart from Bungoma David Wakoli.

Nakhumicha was replaced by CS Deborah Barasa, in the president cabinet changes, which saw allies of former president Uhuru Kenyatta and former prime minister Raila Odinga, taking powerful slots in the Kenya Kwanza government.

She is among CSs who remained jobless after the  reshuffle, with former ICT CS Margaret Ndung’u turning down Ruto’s ambassadorial appointment after firing. Others were moved from their ministries, with addition of new faces like Lee Kinyajui and Rebecca Askul.
