Siaya Bondo Water and Sanitation Company (SIBOWASCO) has announced an ambitious partnership with Gosoft Integrated Technology Solutions to install an additional 350 smart water meters for its clients.
The initiative follows a successful pilot program that saw a 50% increase in revenue from the initial 50 smart meters deployed. The rollout is targeted at three key municipalities; Siaya, Bondo, Ugunja, and Yala Town.
During a sensitization forum for meter readers earlier today, SIBO Managing Director Isaiah Adipo highlighted the positive financial impact of the smart meters.
Adipo noted that the company’s annual revenue has risen from Sh 16 million to a projected Sh 24 million, thanks to the improved accuracy and efficiency of the new technology.
“The smart meters have proven effective, and we are optimistic about expanding our reach with this rollout,” Adipo stated.
The introduction of smart meters is part of a broader strategy to combat fraud within the billing system and enhance revenue collection. Adipo explained that the meters will help address illegal connections and enable more precise billing, as readings can now be done digitally from the office. This innovation will also allow SIBOWASCO to remotely disconnect water supply to clients who have outstanding bills, eliminating the need for physical visits.
The smart meters provide detailed consumption data, which not only aids in billing accuracy but also helps detect leakages and unauthorized water diversions. They are equipped with water control valves that can be remotely activated, ensuring swift action in case of issues.
Currently, SIBOWASCO manages monthly revenues between Ksh. 300,000 and Ksh. 700,000, but this has surged to Ksh. 1.2 million since the introduction of smart meters. This increase underscores the urgent need for technological advancement in water management to ensure every drop of water is accounted for.
With SIBOWASCO serving 18,000 clients, the rollout of smart meters will occur in phases to ensure effective integration. Staff members have expressed their ardor for the technology, particularly praising the remote control features that enhance operational efficiency and customer service.
As the company moves forward, it aims to set a precedent for modern water management solutions, contributing to sustainable practices and improved service delivery in the region.
