Rota village residents in Korando B sub location, Central location in Kisumu West constituency, Kisumu county, are demanding the completion of a bridge they claim had stalled twenty years down the line.

Speaking to The Nyanza Review on Saturday, Elias Omondi, a resident, said that when the construction of the bridge was started way back in the year 2004, they had high hopes that the challenges they had been facing while wading through River Kisian would eventually come to an end.

He said that prior to the construction of the said bridge, the local community had been relying on an emergency makeshift bridge that had been built under former Kisumu county Governor Jack Ranguma.  This was to save the lives the residents,  especially the students who crossed the bridge while going to their respective schools every day.

The resident at the same time said that the metallic footbridge is too narrow to an extent that the construction materials being transported from various hardwares at Otonglo trading center to the construction sites on the other side of the footbridge have to be offloaded and then carried bit by bit to the other side after which they are finally ferried to the actual site.

“The footbridge is too narrow that bulky materials cannot be ferried by motorbikes to the other side, so we are desperately appealing to Kisumu County Governor Anyang Nyong’o to consider completing this bridge that had stalled,” said Elias Omondi.

Another resident, Monica Oluoch, on her part, urged the county government to move with speed and complete the stalled bridge, arguing that the footbridge has become too weak. She said that the metal sheets covering the footbridge have started peeling off, hence posing a big threat to the students who crosses the bridge while commuting to their respective learning institutions.
