Residents of Siaya County have called on authorities to ban disco matangas, citing their role in rising teenage pregnancies and the spread of HIV/AIDS among teenagers. The appeal was made on December 17, 2024, during a community event where County Commissioner Mr. Nobert Komora was urged to take immediate action.
Patricia Apondi, the Siaya County Maendeleo ya Wanawake Chairlady, was vocal in her demand for the prohibition of disco matangas. She stressed the need for parents to monitor their children, particularly during the festive season, to curb these societal issues.
“I call on the County Commissioner to ensure disco matangas are eradicated in this region. If they persist, I’ll personally hold him accountable. Let us prioritize the safety of our children,” said Apondi.
She further warned that failure to supervise teenagers during this period could lead to devastating consequences, including early pregnancies and the transmission of HIV/AIDS.
“If parents fail to supervise their children during this festive season, they risk going back to school pregnant or infected. Education is power, and we must protect these young girls’ futures,” Apondi added.
Mrs. Scholastica Madowo, the South East Alego MCA, shared alarming statistics, highlighting the prevalence of sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV) at 48%, teenage pregnancies at 24%, and HIV/AIDS among youth aged 10–24 at 26% in the region.
“These numbers are alarming and demand a joint effort from all stakeholders. The fight against the triple threat is not just for law enforcement; it requires parents, neighbors, and community leaders to step up,” said Madowo.
She urged parents to collaborate with law enforcement and report any violations of children’s rights instead of concealing incidents.
“Parents, do not cover up when your child’s rights are infringed. Let us work with police to ensure justice is served. Insecurity thrives when we choose silence over action,” she emphasized.
The community leaders stressed the importance of fostering accountability and unity in addressing these challenges effectively. They called on all stakeholders, including parents, educators, law enforcement, and local authorities, to prioritize the welfare and safety of children in Siaya County.
The residents hope that banning disco matangas will not only reduce the triple threat of SGBV, teenage pregnancies, and HIV/AIDS but also safeguard the future of their youth.
