As the world marked international day of Autism, Trans Nzoia Persons Living with Disabilities (PWDs) Chairperson Ojiambo Opis, has warned men in the society taking advantage of young girls living with Autism.

Speaking in Kitale on Wednesday 2, he issued a stern warning to those defiling girls living with Autism and other disabilities, as they will not escape the face of the law, and they community will not relent until they get punished.

“I’m warning those taking advantage of our girls’ with disability and defiling them, they should be now aware that their days are numbered and the fight is not a dead end!” He angrily stated.

According to Opis, there is a case going on currently, where a girl mentally challenged in Sibanga within Cherangani Sub-county was defiled by four boys and the case is before the court. He also mentioned that the four boys were arrested. He cautioned that tough actions will be taken, regardless of one’s status.

“We followed up on the case and ensured that the boys were arrested. We are saying those with such behaviours in this county despite of their status a relative or boda boda riders, wajue kwamba chuma chao ki motoni,” he further warned.

Cases of people taking advantage of women living with mental challenges are not new in the country, however, the PWDs community calls on speedy arrest of perpetrators and justice for the victims.

Speaking during World Autism Day, Brenda Amali a parent with a child with Autism said their children are very affectionate and enjoy touching people. Opis calls on the members in the society not to confuse the touch and affection by the children to defile them.

“Most of the times, these children are not harmful or a threat at any point, they love touching people, so do not chase them away,” she stated.

The parents of children with Autism in Kitale marked the day with their children at Kitale Museum, where they engaged with occupational therapy who educated them on how to best handle their children without feeling the burden.
