A first-term governor in Nyanza is reportedly burning the midnight oil to join a new political outfit for his reelection bid.
According to insider sources, the governor has been holding clandestine meetings with Movement for Democracy and Growth (MDG) party leader David Ochieng, currently the MP for Ugenya.
The governor, a former long-serving lawmaker, severed ties with ODM party leader Raila Odinga after Odinga allied with the Ruto government following the deadly Gen Z protests.
A senior official from the MDG party, speaking on condition of anonymity, confirmed that the county chief is aware of the plans to deny him the ODM party ticket for reelection and is actively collaborating with MDG.
“Yes, the governor is fully aware of the efforts to oust him from ODM and has been working closely with our party. He played a significant role in the party’s formation, and we are confident he will represent us in the 2027 general elections,” the official explained.
While the governor’s activities within the party have been shrouded in secrecy—likely due to concerns over potential repercussions if disclosed prematurely—he was spotted recently at a family function alongside MDG party members.
His position has been further jeopardized by the county senator, an influential figure in ODM, with whom he has significant differences yet to be clarified. The senator is rumored to be backing an ex-lawmaker, now a cabinet member, to fly the ODM flag.
To ensure the governor’s defeat, even under a different party banner, the senator has been conducting a series of meetings with a former gubernatorial candidate who commands substantial voter support, offering him direct nomination to run for Senate.
