National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has suspended operations of Super Metro Limited, a week after one of its buses caused death of a passenger, something that brought public outcry in the country.
In a statement, NTSA confirmed that Super Metro is not in compliance with Public Service Vehicles Regulations, 2024 and other conditions and will only be allowed to operate after it fully aligns.
“This is to notify the public that the Authority has suspended Super Metro Limited’s operator licence until the Company fully complies with the Public Service Vehicles Regulations, 2014 and other set conditions,” stated NTSA.
NTSA noted that out of 523 vehicles, 15 of them had expired inspection certificates, while 8 had expired Road Service Licenses (RSL).
The company was found not in compliance with Traffic Rules, 2020, where driving credentials of most of its drivers were found not to have met set conditions.
“On compliance with The Traffic (Driving Schools, Driving Instructors and Driving Licences) Rules, 2020, it was established that the driving credentials of the drivers assigned to the Company’s portal do not meet the required qualifications which presents a major road safety risk,” NTSA further heightened.
NTSA also found that Super Metro violated NTSA’s provisions, Section 5, Sub-section 1e among other violations, that led to suspension of its operations.
In order to revert this suspension, NTSA highlighted some conditions that the transport company must meet, including presenting all its vehicles to speed limiter vendors for checks, obtain compliance certificates for all vehicles, 42 drivers with speed violations to be presented for retest, disengage unqualified drivers, sensitize all its drivers on road safety and submit all minutes, records, photos of the sensitization process to NTSA offices among other conditions.
“The Company must present forty-two (42) drivers, out of the one hundred and nine (109) drivers with speed violations, for a retest at the Likoni Driver Test Centre. We note that 64 of the Company’s drivers failed a retest on 10th March 2025 and this led to the suspension of their respective driving licenses,” NTSA stated.
The transport safety body went further cautioning members of the public from using vehicles belonging to Super Metro Limited and warned of impounding of such vehicles if found on the roads.
