Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja faced backlash after he confirmed that he will present himself before the court when ready after ignoring court summons related to abductions.
The IG has defied court orders three times. The first time he was summoned to appear before the court was on December 31, 2024 where he was specifically instructed to appear before the court with the then abducted youths; Kibet, Naomi, Bill among others but he defied and never showed up. Justice Alexander then adjourned the hearing to 12 noon on the same day, but again the IG did not come.
The court provided further instructions to the Interior CS Kipchumba Murkomen and IG Kanja to appear in court on January 8, 2025 to explain why the abducted Kenyans had not been released yet, but just like before, they never showed up.
The IG defied court orders for the third time when the court summoned him together with the DCI boss Mohammed Amin over the case of missing Mlolongo 4 , that is Steve kavingo, Justus Mutumwa, Martin Nzyuko and Kalani Muema but again, he did not show up saying that the sermons were served ‘too late’
While addressing the press, IG Kanja hinted at criminal gangs posing as police as abductions of Government critics arise and added that the probe of the missing Mlolongo 4 is at advanced stages and Kenyans will shortly know what really happened. This comes after he boldly claimed on December 26, 2024 that the ongoing abductions cases had nothing to do with the police saying that those were just allegations aimed at tarnishing the image of the National Police Service, claims that left Kenyans wondering if he is involved in the abductions, or possess instrumental information about the ongoing abductions.
“ Are you investigating the abductions or are you focused on cleansing the image of the police service. If you are not investigating the abductions it means you know something,” Milliciachris commented.
“ These are the guardians of the rule of law,” Wix added.
The Law Society of Kenya (LSK) called for his resignation after he made this statement, which they cited as underwhelming. Kenyans strongly supported this
“What Faith wants, Faith gets,” one netizen hilariously commented to show their full support.
Kenyans have since assumed the IG as incompetent and could not hide their fury after his lousy statement yesterday.
“The leaders in Government are clearly telling wanainchi that court orders are not compulsory to follow. In fact there’s no need to show up for court cases. I hope CJ Koome will extend the same privilege to wanainchi,” KV commented.
“Unataka Kupeleka jambazi kotini ambayo wewe mwenyewe umekataa kuenda?” Mahat added.
“I hope that judges take this personally,” Lone Renja added.
The IG’s recently displayed attitude could only mean that he think he is above the law, and his continued defiance of the court orders not only disrespects the rule of law but also erodes public trust in the judicial system.
