For the 3rd time this year , the Ministry of Sports will have a new cabinet secretary. Salim Mvurya who was the first governor of Kwale county and former Cabinet secretary of Mining, Blue Economy, and Maritime Affairs will be in-charge of the Sports ministry which also incorporates Youth Affairs and Creative Economy. The outgoing Sports Cabinet Secretary, Onesmus Kipchumba Murkomen, has been transferred to the Ministry of Interior and National Administration.
The reshuffle also included appointing former Sports Cabinet Secretary Ababu Namwamba as the Permanent Representative of Kenya to the United States Environment Programme (UNEP)/ United Nations Office at Nairobi (UNON).
The new Cabinet Secretary gets the job while the country is working round the clock to make the stadia ready for the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) slated for February of 2025 and also the upcoming AFRICAN CUP OF NATIONS (AFCON) in 2027, where Kenya is expected co-host with Uganda and Tanzania.
The incoming Sports CS expressed his gratitude to the President for having consigned in him, with such a post.
“I am truly honored and humbled by H.E. President @WilliamsRuto’s trust in reassigning me to the Ministry of Youth Affairs, Creative Economy, and Sports,” admitted the CS.
He has promised to partner with various stakeholders to empower youths and bolster their skills, in a move to create jobs and growing the country’s economy.
“As I transition to the Ministry of Youth Affairs, Creative Economy, and Sports @moyasa_ke, I am eager to collaborate with stakeholders to empower the youth through employment and skills development, spur the creative economy to drive innovation and job creation, and promote sports as a tool for national unity and economic growth, ultimately contributing to the sustainable development of the country,” he vowed.
Mvurya noted that it is a privilege to continue serving the people of Kenya, and look forward to contributing to the nation’s development in his new capacity, while advancing the realization of the Kenya Kwanza manifesto.
In a press release, the President’s office confirmed that the assignments and reassignments aim at optimizing performances of public officials in order to enhance service delivery, as outlined in the plan under the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA).”
