Kenyan Afro-benga artist Awicko Wuod Nyapala has made a heartfelt plea for financial assistance, shedding light on the challenges he is facing. The musician revealed he was evicted from his house due to unpaid rent and has been homeless for weeks. A father of two, Awicko is now relying on donations from fans and well-wishers to make ends meet.
Known for his unique sense of style and captivating music, the artist disclosed that he is broke and struggling to provide for himself and his family during this difficult time.
Awicko in an interview with Pamoja Radio, revealed that, despite nearly five years of commitment to his music career, the returns have been dismal. His financial woes are attributed to irregular performances, delayed royalty payouts, and the absence of corporate endorsements, highlighting the challenges faced by artists navigating an unpredictable industry.
“It’s been almost five years that I’ve been making music, and the company that distributes my music hasn’t been able to pay me my royalties on time. The little money I’ve earned from music is what I’ve reinvested into my craft. Unfortunately, I haven’t had back-to-back gigs or corporate deals to support myself financially,” he disclosed.
Awicko’s financial troubles deepened in late 2024, culminating in his eviction from his rented home in January 2025. Homeless for nearly three weeks, he now faces the harsh realities of life on the streets, struggling to secure basic necessities. His plight underscores the escalating economic challenges that continue to push vulnerable individuals to the brink.
“Last year, things got worse with bills piling up and rent arrears accumulating to the point that I was evicted this month. I’m now homeless, and it’s been almost three weeks since I’ve had a proper meal,” revealed the artist.
This isn’t the first time Awicko has battled adversity. In a 2021 interview, he disclosed that he had contemplated suicide during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic due to crippling financial struggles.
The difficult period became a source of inspiration for his hit song Ohala, a powerful collaboration with gospel artist Mr. Seed. Awicko’s career boasts notable partnerships, including working alongside celebrated ohangla star Prince Indah, cementing his place in Kenya’s music scene.
Despite his struggles, Awicko remains hopeful that his resilience and fan support will reignite his career.
