Former Public Service Cabinet Secretary and Senior Advisor at the State House, Hon. Moses Kuria has given an ultimatum for the advertisement of IEBC commissioners while backing up Supreme Court Justice, Isaac Lenaola over his yesterday’s utterances.
Lenaola criticised the Government over its delay in reconstituting the Independence Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).
The Judge blasted both the Executive and the Parliament in this laxity, and in turn prioritizing political legislation at the expense of issues that immensely and directly affect the people.
Kuria supported Lenaola, affirming that indeed the country is dangerously living, having operations without IEBC commissioners.
In regards to this, Kuria is urging the other members of the IEBC to initiate the process of advertising for the posts of IEBC commissioners. He gave out a timeline that this needs to be done by latest Friday next week. Kuria agreed that the panel to select the commissioners is enough for a quorum, and therefore, no need to incorporate Wiper party representatives, as the party had requested.
“Even without the WIPER representative at the IEBC Selection Panel, I agree with Justice Lenaola. The Panel is Quorate. I urge the other members to meet on Monday and kick off the process of advertising for IEBC Commissioners latest by Friday 13th December. We are living dangerously without an electoral body,” said Kuria.
The IEBC has been operating without commissioners since the unceremonious exit of Vice-Chairperson Juliana Cherera, Justus Nyang’aya, Irene Masit and Francis Wanderi, and the retirement of the IEBC chairperson, Mr. Wafula Chebukati. Other two commissioners; Boya Molu and Prof. Abdi Guliye also retired upon expiry of their terms last year.
On July 9, 2024, President William Ruto appended his signature on the Independence Electoral and Boundaries Commission (Amendment) Bill, that cleared the way for appointment of a panel to recruit IEBC commissioners. Retired Prime Minister Raila Odinga was present when the bill was assented by the President.
