The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Diaspora Affairs on Thursday, January 16, accused social media influencers of escalating misinformation on government projects.
In the statement released, the ministry faults them for spreading misinformation and disinformation, which is aimed at undermining the credibility of the government.
“These activities, initially sparked by genuine protests led by ‘Gen Z’, have evolved into organised cyber attacks by a few social media influencers and seeks to delegitimize government initiatives, discourage high-level visits, de-campaign Kenya’s candidates for international and regional positions, while sending intimidatory messages to members of international community,” read apart of the statement.
The statement comes days after Kenyans on various social media platforms, used images from June 2024 protests, and the 2007-08 general elections, calling for justice from the international community.
The ministry has however said, some images being shared to the international communities, are AI- generated and fake.
“The ministry notes that these are cyber activities majority of which are AI-generated deepfakes, fabricated narratives, widespread misinformation campaigns, and coordinated auto-generated emails are unfortunately being sent to foreign capitals,” the ministry further stated. re
The Musalia Mudavadi led ministry has assured its partners that efforts are in progress to address the challenges. Among them highlighted initiatives include promoting ethical practices in the digital space.
“The Ministry seeks to reassure all efforts are underway to address these challenges including but not limited to the development of a technology Responsibility Charter aimed at promoting accountability and ethical practices in the digital space,” read the statement.
Other measures taken as highlighted by the ministry were, withdrawal of the controversial 2024 finance Bill, establishment of a Broad-Based government, and further expansion and protection of civic space, as well as ensuring rights and safety protection of individuals.
“The Ministry assures all Diplomatic Missions, UN Agencies and International Organisations of its willingness to discuss any concerns or clarifications and remains open to address these shared risks while fostering constructive dialogue, mutual understanding and adherence to its constitutional and international environment,” the statement further read.
The negative remarks were further backed by the abduction of Tanzania activist Maria Sarungi Tsehai was abducted in Nairobi on Sunday, sparking outcry from Amnesty International and her advocacy organisation.
