Kitale Film Week Kick Off, Here is what to Expect from One Week of Screening African Films

Third Edition of The Kitale Film week 2025, under the theme “Cinema That Speaks to our souls”
officially kicked off on Sunday, February 2 evening , at DeepSea Resort in Kitale Town.

Peter Pages Bwire, the founder of Kitale Film Week of not only watching, but workshop and screening for film enthusiasts said, the goal of the event is not centered at boosting creative economy and encouraging watching of African produced films, but other economical generating activities in Trans Nzoia County.

“This is a statement of our belief that watching African films as Africans is the door to many possibilities, not just in the creative economy, but in many other sectors,” he stated.

According to Pages, the film which began in 2023, Aimed at showcasing a different face of the food basket of the country, but a film destination. In he last two editions, the event over 200 African films to residence of Kitale, including students.

“We began in 2023, our primary goal was to make Kitale a creative city, to shine our light from little slices of the world on the stories that make us African and human. Since 2023, we have screened over 200 African films,” he said.

The event attracted film writers, directors from Germany, Nigeria, Uganda, and other notable names in the Kenyan film industry including Njoki Muhoho, Mudamba , Mudamba and Wambui Gathee from Docubox.

The chief guest Timothy Owase, CEO Kenya Film Commission, echoed the government’s support to the film industry, promising to seek a collaboration with county leadership to support such events and other film events in the county. Owase further refuted claims of ongoing social media romours about Kalasha Awards coming as fake.

‘Allow me to clear the air on the matter that has been going about as far as Kalasha Awards is concerned. I confirm that this year Kalasha will take place. the codes will be out soon, anything else is romours,” Owase clarified.

Ezekiel Onyango Ezy’ chairperson Kenya Film and TV Professionals Association urged the filmmakers in the room to come up with digital solutions for challenges affecting the film industry, through collaborations and embracing the digital space.

On the first day, the audience were entertained by a film shot in Northern Kenya Turkana, Nawi, depicting the culture of early marriages. the captivating film was also nominated for the 2025 Oscar awards, making it to top 15.
