The County Government of Kisumu under the visionary Governorship of Prof. Anyang Nyongo through its Education, ICT, Vocational Training and Social Services, has lived up to its vision of being a leading service provider.
According to a report published in the county’s website, while updating the progress of education sector in Kisumu, the department has so far
issued a total of sh205million
to 1260 scholarship students and 32,143
bursary beneficiaries from all the 35 wards in Kisumu County. A total of 33,403 beneficiaries have received financial support in the previous fiscal year.
From analysis, this is a double increase compared to the allocation and disbursement for the Financial Year 2018/2019 that was at Ksh 140M covering 1,190 students on scholarships and 18,734 bursary beneficiaries from all the wards, totaling to 19,924 beneficiaries.
On Early Childhood
In regards to Early Childhood Development Education (ECDE), the department undertook the supply of furniture, provision of teaching and learning materials. A total of 24,459 text books and 130,820 exercise books worth KShs. 25,000,000 were purchased during that period.
The department also funded a school feeding program that saw the provision of 3,996 bags of rice and 1,350 units of 10-litre jerrycans cooking oil in the last financial teacher recruitment.
Additionally, the sector undertook the monitoring and capacity building and sanitation as well as the appraisal and promotion of 733 ECDE teachers with the training for 78 teachers in the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) in all public primary schools in the entire county.
In order to satisfy the needs of those wishing to join the technical and vocational training institutions, the county government of kisumu has so far established a total of 21 operational technical training and vocational institutions.
A month ago, Governor Nyong’o while speaking after the issuance of bursaries and scholarship cheques in the county, underscored the importance of education saying his government has given education first priority and will continue to allocate more funds to ensure all needy students in the county have access to education.
“Education is the key to a better future, so my government will allocate more funds from the county’s budget allocation every financial year through the respective ward development kitty to cater for education of all needy students,” he emphasized.
In order to live up to his pledge to continue supporting the education of needy students in the county, the Governor allocated a total of sh213.7million in the financial year 2024/2025.
Governor Nyongo at the same time urged the residents of Kisumu County especially the parents facing harsh economic challenges and are unable to pay fees for their children in either technical and vocational colleges, secondary schools or universities to apply for bursaries in good time to ensure that the needy students are not left out.
