Kisii Senator Richard Onyonka in an official letter addressed to President William Ruto has declined an invite to the State New Year’s Eve Dinner at Kisii State Lodge due to the ongoing abduction of Kenyans.
Senator Onyonka’s statement comes a day after Kenyans protested over up surging cases of abductions. The demonstrations have left some injured while 23 protesters arrested and yet to be detained for 14 more days awaiting further investigation, citing incitement of the public towards the state.
The Senator in his statement, asserted that the President has failed to address the issue despite numerous appeals from Kenyans.
“We are ending our year at a very low end! Kenyans have asked, begged and pleaded with President Ruto to which he has given a deaf ear! Fidelity to our constitution is paramount to all Kenyans. We have always expected and hoped that the president would uphold the rule of law, but this has failed” the letter read in part.
The Senator who has in numerous occasions come out boldly to insist on the government being accountable to it’s electorate, expressed his dissatisfaction on President Ruto’s administration. He noted that the President should have heeded to public outcry in order to maintain political stability in the country.
” I have a strong conviction that the president has fallen short of his Oath of Office where he should obey, preserve, protect and uphold the sovereignty, integrity and dignity of the people of Kenya. Expectations are that after these pleas from Kenyans of all walks of life, the Head of state in his new year clarion call of unity of purpose, magnanimity and brotherliness to all Kenyans,he would have released these young Kenyans who were abducted and some arrested, he has not,” he stated.
Onyonka further confirmed that his divergent views are seemingly opposed to the president’s ruling and is uncomfortable with the fact that some seem normal, happy and excited with color and pomp when other Kenyan families are agonizing in pain looking for their loved ones to share during the festive season. He therefore maintained that he will not be part of the celebration slated in Kisii by the State.
” Therefore, because of my deeply held views on these issues, I will not be attending the State New Year’s Eve Dinner at the Kisii State Lodge, on the evening of Tuesday, December 31, 2024, in my capacity as the Senator of Kisii County. I therefore decline the invitation,” he affirmed.
