The Law Society of Kenya has today 28th October 2024 called for the immediate release of vocal activist.

Maverick Aoko, a prominent social media influencer, has been missing for five days, raising alarm among her followers and the broader community. The situation escalated during a recent statement by LSK President Faith Odhiambo, who urged Kenyans to report any information regarding Aoko’s whereabouts via the society’s hotline.

“We have been informed of her missing status and are appealing for any leads. Our hotline is operational. Please contact the LSK. Every life is important,” Odhiambo stated, emphasizing the urgency of the matter.

She also called on those responsible for Aoko’s disappearance to release her immediately, highlighting the need to combat a culture of intimidation and fear in the country. “Let’s handle issues within the boundaries of the law,” she remarked, underscoring the importance of upholding the rule of law.

Despite attempts to reach Aoko offline, there has been no success, leading many to suspect she may be another victim of abductions targeting outspoken activists and social media commentators. The phrase “Where is Aoko?” has gained traction on Twitter, with numerous users voicing their concerns and demanding answers.

Aoko was charged in court on August 19, 2024, facing accusations including publishing false information under the Computer Misuse and Cybercrimes Act and cyber harassment. Her legal troubles have heightened fears about her safety.

Social media reactions have been intense, with some expressing hope for her safe return. “Maverick Aoko is missing, and this is a serious matter. Let’s pray for her safety. We are living in a country where the regime shows little compassion,” said Cornelis Ronoh.

Embakasi East MP Babu Owino also expressed concern, stating, “Aoko has been missing for several days, and her current location is unknown. I’ve reached out to her family and close friends.”

As the search for Aoko continues, the community remains on high alert, urging unity in the face of rising concerns over safety and freedom of expression.
