Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS) has suspended the permits of Chinese steelmaker Rongtai, over allegations of producing Substandard ribbed bars.

This action closely follows market surveillance operations that revealed the production and distribution of substandard ribbed bars, which are essential for concrete reinforcement in construction were found to violate EAS 412-2:2019 specifications , posing significant risks to construction safety and public welfare.

In a statement released by KEBS on January 28, 2015 they reported that they have already confiscated the products from the manufacturer’s premises and the market.

“We directed the company to stop production of the non-compliant ribbed bars, ordered a recall of distributed sub-standard products from the market, and suspended operations of the company until it demonstrates full compliance with required standards.” They reported.

In line with this, KEBS strongly admonished the public against purchasing or using any ribbed bar from Rongtai steel company LTD until further notice.

“The use of sub standard construction materials undermines the structural integrity of buildings and endangers public safety,” the statement further read.

Netizens could not help but think that the whole charade has nothing to do with KEBS, non-compliance. They insisted that it was Devki’s orchestrated strategy of eliminating other steel companies in order to remain a monopoly.

” Huyu jamaa wa connections hataki competition.” Reagan Nderitu said.

While Devki remains the main still supplier in the country, Gatimu expressed his concerns over the Indian led group suppressing competition, to dominate the East African market, in ribbed bar production.

” Devki won’t rest until he remains a monopoly in the steel industry. The king is clapping as he cripples the economy.” Gatimu added

There are also speculations that Devki might be receiving support from the government, following Devki’s tycoon, Narendra Naval immense support for Ruto’s regime on April  2024. The Indian Guru had stated that he could wish Kenya was ruled by President William Ruto for 25 years, during the launch of the Cemtech Clinker Plant in West Pokot.

” The president loves this country so much, I lack words to thank him, may the Lord give him long life. I wish that we have this president for at least 25 years,” Narendra had stated.
