According to the eyewitness report, the lawmaker was being trailed by two assailants on a motorbike, when one of them alighted and shot him at a close range, leaving the him fatally injured and was pronounced dead on arrival at Nairobi Hospital.
Mourning his colleague also elected on an ODM ticket, Saboti legislator Caleb Amisi has recalled the light moment they shared with the slain MP five hours before his tragic death at the Bunge Tower in the afternoon.
Amisi shocked by news of his death, said the late Were had teased him of having a serious conversation him, as things seemed not to be headed in the right direction.
“I was with my colleague just this afternoon in parliament, chatted, laughed, and he told me I need a conversation with you ,mambo si mazuri. His exact words . Five hours later, he is no more. The news is shocking,” Amisi wrote.
The MP’s bodyguard is said to have survived the terrific incident, as Kenyans react on the rise of shootings in the country. Among them is Mumias East MP Peter Salasya, who has called on the police to speed up on the investigations for the killers to be brought books.
“This is a dark day. My heart goes out to his family and constituents. This is a barbaric act! Attacking our leaders is an attack on our democracy! Police-act fast! Bring our leader’s killers to books! Rest in peace, Hon. Were. Your legacy lives on,” Salasya mourned.
The incident refreshing the memory of Kenyans back in 2015, where Kabete MP John Muchai was shot dead in Nairobi Central Business District (CBD), his family surviving the attack as they were riding in a different car.
Were was among the few MPs who voted No in the controversial Finance Bill 2024, that was strongly opposed by Gen Zs sparking protests across the country in June 2024, and was serving his second term in the 13th August House.
