Ford Kenya youths and supporters in Trans Nzoia County staged a peaceful protest, following the recent attacks on National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula, with reports to impeach him.
Speaking to the press in Kitale on Tuesday, February 18, during the protests led by the party’s deputy branch secretary Boaz Werunga, they defended their party leader from his critics, saying that they will not go down without a fight.
“We have witnessed a section of self-centered political class planning to oust Speaker Moses Wetang’ula from office. We shall not allow that to pass, and let them have their way,” Werunga angrily said.
Supporting Werunga, Trans Nzoia Ford Kenya youth chairperson Harrison Wesa, said the individuals behind the impeachment plan are ill-natured, as Wetang’ula has performed and delivered as the Speaker in the 13th August House.
“It is public knowledge that Speaker Moses Wetang’ula has performed to perfection as the Speaker of the National Assembly! The plan to impeach him is a strategy to dim his political career by people with malicious intentions,” Wesa stated.
Andrew Wafula and John Sululu, members of the Wetang’ula led party, called on United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party leader President William Ruto to come and defend Wetang’ula, as he delivered votes for the ruling party in his home county Bungoma in 2022.
Earlier on Tuesday afternoon, Mumias East Member of Parliament Peter Salasya had asked Azimio La Umoja One Kenya Alliance leader Raila Odinga, to use the opportunity as the Majority party in the National Assembly to impeach Wetang’ula.
The discussions about the majority and minority in the National Assembly has sparked after High Court ruling, which nullified the declaration by Wetang’ula in October 22, 2022, where he declared the Kenya Kwanza Alliance as the majority Party of the 13th August House.
However, Wetang’ula in his ruling on Tuesday, February 11, 2025 dismissed the ruling by the High Court. He stated that the High Court cannot declare the majority and minority in Parliament, reinstating his previous declaration, of Kenya Kwanza Alliance being the majority Party in Parliament.
As the leadership of the National Assembly remains in limbo, political analysts including former nominated senator Millicent Omanga, said that the current state of the National Assembly leadership, is the biggest test of the Broad- Based government.
