The County Government of Siaya is intensifying its efforts to address preventable maternal and newborn mortality, emphasizing the critical need for effective healthcare strategies during childbirth.
Recognizing the profound impact of losing a mother or newborn during delivery, the Health Department is actively working to implement solutions aimed at eradicating these tragic outcomes.
In collaboration with Access to Medicine, the county has launched a pivotal initiative designed to enhance the knowledge and skills of healthcare professionals, including obstetricians, gynecologists, and reproductive health coordinators.
This training focuses on two key frameworks: the Every Newborn Action Plan (ENAP) and Ending Preventable Maternal Mortality (EPMM).
ENAP aims to eliminate preventable newborn deaths, reduce disabilities, and eradicate avoidable stillbirths by 2030. Meanwhile, EPMM seeks to lower the maternal mortality rate to below 70 per 100,000 live births by addressing healthcare inequities that disproportionately affect vulnerable populations.
A recent meeting gathered healthcare champions to discuss the targets and strategies of ENAP and EPMM, as well as to review reproductive health indicators.
The event highlighted the importance of disseminating the acquired knowledge within local facilities to maximize the impact of these essential programs.
With a renewed commitment to improving maternal and newborn health, Siaya’s leadership is optimistic that these initiatives will lead to a future where no mother or child experiences preventable loss.
