At least six people have lost their lives following the ongoing cholera outbreak in Kenya, with 97 confirmed cases reported across various health facilities, according to the Ministry of Health. The fatality rate currently stands at 6.2 percent.

Migori County has been hit the hardest, with 53 cases and one death. Kisumu follows closely behind with 32 cases and four fatalities, while Nairobi has reported 12 cases, one of which ended in death.

In response, all counties have been placed on heightened alert as the Ministry of Health works to curb further spread of the disease.

Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale reassured the public, emphasizing that the country is fully equipped to manage the outbreak.

“We are on high alert in all counties, and surveillance efforts have been enhanced. Community awareness campaigns have been intensified to ensure quick responses to any emerging alerts,” Duale said in a recent statement.

The health advisory follows actions taken by the Nairobi County government, which has instructed city hospitals to activate rapid response teams and implement cholera control measures after the disease spread to Kibra Sub-County.

Preventive measures, including contact tracing, testing, and treatment of suspected cases, have already been put into place.

Additionally, health workers are receiving specialized training to help manage the outbreak.

The ministry is also engaging local communities to increase awareness about cholera, a disease characterized by severe diarrhea, vomiting, muscle pains, and dehydration. If left untreated, cholera can be fatal, but it is preventable through proper sanitation, safe food and water consumption, and timely medical intervention.

The World Health Organization (WHO) recently reported a 70 percent surge in cholera deaths worldwide last year, adding urgency to the need for prompt action in managing this outbreak.

As the disease spreads, the health ministry has urged the public to maintain hygiene practices and seek immediate medical attention if symptoms appear.
